Appetite Biology 101

All About Your AppetiteSince this is an introduction to what I’m calling “Appetite Biology,” let’s start at the beginning.

SATIETY – It’s an unusual word but it belongs in this discussion. And the concept is simple enough. It means feeling full. Feeling satiated. It means you’re no longer hungry. This is important because you’re not going to have ongoing success in controlling your appetite if you’re always feeling half-famished. Right? And one of the important ways to feel fuller longer is to include fiber in your diet. So let’s talk about fiber.

FIBER – There are two types of dietary fiber. Soluble fiber and insoluble fiber. Fruit and vegetables contain both types, which makes them an ideal and important part of any healthy eating plan.

— Soluble Fiber

Soluble dietary fiber slows your digestion down. And in terms of appetite control, that’s a good thing.

Cucumbers, blueberries, beans, and nuts are good sources of soluble fiber.

Soluble fiber can also be found in prunes and prune juice, an easy way to increase your fiber intake.
There’s also oats, barley, citrus fruits, and apples.

— Insoluble Fiber

Insoluble fiber is important because it helps add bulk as your food moves through your digestive tract and out through your stool. As the name suggests, it doesn’t dissolve. It simply helps food move more quickly through your system.

One valuable result of including insoluble fiber in your diet is that you will have a healthier elimination system because fiber traps any toxins and flushes them out of your body.
Good sources of insoluble fiber include dark green leafy vegetables, green beans, carrots, and celery.

Incidentally fiber not only promotes fullness (satiety, remember?), it improves your digestive functions and your gut health.

— Fiber Tablets

A few words about fiber tablets and capsules, if you choose to go that way. They contain natural fibers such as psyllium husk, oat bran fiber, and apple pectin fiber.
Be sure to drink plenty of water while you’re taking them, to avoid blocking up your digestive tract.

Water Is An Easy Way To Feel Full Sooner

A drink of water will help to fill your stomach. It sends a fullness signal to your brain and that tones down the feeling of hunger. So a glass of water before your meal is a simple and easy appetite control trick.

If you have a hard time drinking water, one option to get the liquid into your body is a vegetable broth. It will fill you up but has few calories.

Appetite Suppressing Supplements

If you do decide to buy a supplement, it’s important to know that this is an unregulated arena. The FDA does not require companies to get approval for dietary or nutritional supplements. They go through no safety checks and no effectiveness testing. So whatever protection the FDA approval process might have afforded you, it’s non-existent in the nutritional supplements market.


And that includes appetite suppressing supplements.

On a side note, if I were buying nutritional supplements, I’d look for products manufactured in the USA (not China – they’ve been caught exporting contaminated products many times) and I’d want to see a lot of consumer praise for the product. Genuine user feedback in a public forum, for example.
Also, be aware that some natural products can interact adversely with pharmaceuticals.

Now, back to appetite pills…

In their article “Appetite Suppressant Dangers,” Livestrong.com warns about multiple risks that come with appetite suppressing products, including those marketed as “natural.” The risks include: high blood pressure, pulmonary (lung) hypertension, cardiovascular problems, fainting, irregular heartbeat, swelling (edema) of the legs and feet, painful urination, breathing difficulties — and that’s not all but it should be enough to warn us off taking this approach to appetite control.

A Cautionary Note About Prescription Products

If you are considering using prescription drugs for appetite control or weight loss, do yourself a favor. Open your favorite search engine and do an internet search for the name of that pharmaceutical. Learn all you can about the adverse effects and health risks it presents.
